Staff reports

Floyd County Police have released the incident report regarding the discovery of a firearm last Thursday at Model High School.

According to the report, the school resource officer and the assistant principal received information from a faculty member that a student had a firearm in his backpack.

The teen, whose name is not being released due to him being a minor, apparently had told another student that he had the gun.

A Llama .45 caliber handgun was found in the backpack, with seven rounds in the magazine and a box of ammunition.

The student reportedly said that he was not going to hurt anyone.

The firearm was secured and placed into evidence at the Floyd County Police Department and the student was charged with possessing a firearm in a school safety zone and possession of a firearm by a person under the age of 18.

Tim Hensley with the Floyd County School System said that parents were notified of the incident and it is not believed that the student had intended to harm anyone else.
