The Rome City Commission has approved a rezoning that will pave the way for the construction of new townhouses near Anna K. Davie Elementary School in South Rome.
The approval comes with a condition that the townhouses face the road like the other residences in the area.
“I had met with the applicant multiple times before he submitted,” said Rome-Floyd Planning Director Brice Wood.”He gave me a rough idea of what his plans were, and I told him if he made one or two concessions we would work with him and staff would support him. They provided a site plan that does show 18 townhouses with parking in the rear behind them. This is nice because it’s walkable to the elementary school as well as multiple churches. There is a park down in South Rome as well. This is a good example of infill development, adding more homes to our existing infrastructure that we have already paid for.”
The commission also approved a rezoning for property at 101 John Davenport Drive for a licensed massage therapist practice.
Commissioners denied a rezoning application for property on Roseway Circle in North Rome for an adult daycare operation.
The rezoning to commercial will allow for continued use of an existing building.
The planning commission recommended denial of the application as did planning staff, noting that the proposed use with a potential of up to 14 people (12 clients and two staff) staying on the property on a daily basis has the potential to be considerably more intensive than what the adjacent and nearby properties typically experience.
“The proposed service, as described by the applicant, is inconsistent in its size, intensity, and hours of operation when compared to the adjacent residential uses.”
