The Rome City Commission has read a proclamation condemning Hamas and expressing support for the defense of Israel.
On October 7, Hamas launched a surprise terrorist attack from Gaza on multiple population centers in southern Israel, murdering and torturing civilians in their homes and at a music festival. The victims included men, women, and children. More than 200 were kidnapped and remain hostages.
Among those killed were Lt. Colonel JR Davidov, who was in Rome last November as part of a law enforcement exchange program, and Yahav Winner, a young filmmaker, who was to visit Rome next month as part of the Rome International Film Festival.
The proclamation, read by Rome City Commissioner Jamie Doss Monday, stated:
“The City of Rome unequivocally condemns the Hamas terrorist attacks, stands with Israel’s right to defend itself against the terrorist organization Hamas, and extends its unwavering support to all innocent people regardless of their nationality or faith.”
The proclamation also recognizes Israel as a long-time ally of the United States and rejects anti-Semitism and all other forms of prejudice both in Rome and around the world.
Michelle Haney, President-Elect of Rome’s Rodeph Shalom Congregation was at the commission meeting to accept the proclamation.
“I am very honored to accept this proclamation on behalf of the Consulate General of Israel of the Southeast and the Jewish Community of Rome, Georgia,” Haney said. “Members of the Rodeph Shalom Congregation are very proud to be part of this outstanding community.”
