The Rome City Commission has approved a contract for a major sewer project.
KM Davis contracting was the low bidder at $7.9 million.
According to Rome Water and Sewer Division Director John Boyd, the Burwell Creek sewer trunk line will be a major undertaking for the city.
“The project consists of just less than 12,000 feet of 24-inch PVC pipe and manholes,” he said. “We are hoping the project will take 180 to 210 days, but the terrain that this line is in is going to make it a very tough project.
The trunk line begins at Highway 53 and the bypass and runs behind Rome High School and Celanese, and ends in the Riverside Parkway area near the ECO Center.
“The sewer that comes out of the Shannon community comes through this trunk main,” Boyd said. “It is about 85 percent industrial or commercial sewer, and the other 15 percent is residential. By the time it comes into Rome, roughly 7 to 8 miles, it is some pretty tough sewer to deal with.”
The corrosiveness of the current ductile line has created issues with the main and manholes in the area.
