Last week, the Georgia Department of Transportation Board met in Rome over two days, and local officials were able to get some updates on a number of projects.
Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord shared some of those updates during Tuesday’s Floyd County Commission meeting.
“Everyone knows the Second Avenue project has had some delays,” he said. “Some of those with design issues—knowing where all of the utilities are at—as well as the courthouse, which actually impacted that, somewhat, for a couple of weeks. We got some good updates on our bypasses that are scheduled to be let in the coming years. I think the Southeast Bypass is scheduled for January of 2028. The South Bypass is scheduled for February of 2031, and then the Rome-Cartersville Development Corridor is actually a little bit ahead of schedule. It has a let date of July 2027.”
According to McCord, he had some good conversations regarding the Bells Ferry Bridge over Woodward Creek, which has been closed due to wear.
“I got some positive communication on trying to get that funded early into fiscal year 2026-2027, which starts next week,” he said. “Also, the City of Rome’s South Broad Street Bridge needs some extensive restoration and/or repairs, or even replacement, coming soon. I thought it was a good meeting, and good information was shared by the board. I appreciate them being in town.”
The GDOT board also gave updates on the statewide transportation plan and rules changes regarding automated school zone devices.
