The Rome City Commission has approved equipment purchases for the new reverse osmosis water treatment facility.
Rome Water and Sewer Division Director John Boyd described the water plant project as a very expensive puzzle they are putting together, and the new equipment is the corner pieces of that puzzle.
“These are the anaerobic membranes, which will basically clean up the water before it hits our reverse osmosis facility. The R.O. is a ROTEC. We did a secondary pilot, which we learned from the EPD, through our attorney, that they are requiring all systems to do a secondary pilot. We did it on our own, and now they are making all systems do a secondary pilot. We completed the secondary pilot to make sure these two components will work well together. The pilot went well, and now we are here to seek your approval to get in line to get these two pieces of major equipment coming this way to be here when we start construction.”
The cost of the equipment is just over $34 million.
Rome is constructing the new facility using funds received in a settlement with carpet manufacturers, chemical companies and others regarding PFAS contamination in the Oostanaula River, impacting the city’s water supply.
Also Monday, the Rome City Commission approved a contract for the Enterprise Corner Water Extension.
“Enterprise Corner is off of Highway 411,” Boyd said. “That is the development authority property that they bought. We had 13 bids for this project. The low bid was for $3,469,465.35. He is a local contractor—TJL Construction– which is out of the Taylorsville area.”
That project will consist of 2.89 miles of 16-inch water line, along with 18 and 16-inch valves.
A number of fire hydrants have been added to the project in anticipation of future growth.
The water line extension was one of the projects included in the 2023 special purpose, local option sales tax package.
