-Staff reports-
Demolition and cleanup are about to begin at the Battey Business Complex on North Division Street, and on Monday, an update meeting was held at the Rome-Floyd County Development Authority office.
The development authority received a United States Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields Cleanup Grant in 2024 to address asbestos-containing materials, lead-contaminated soil, and other hazardous materials at the former Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital site.
A HUD grant was also obtained to fund building demolition.
The planned cleanup and building demolition will begin on or about October 27.
Barry Roberts with Atlanta Demolition spoke during Monday’s meeting.
“We have done a lot of this Brownfields cleanup, remediation, and demo all over the Southeast,” he said. “So, we plan the job to be least impactful to the community with our haul routes, our trucks, our numbers, and our dust controls. If we do our job well, you guys won’t even know what’s happening, unless you come by and look.”
Roberts promised an open and transparent process.
“If the community has any questions, we may hold community meetings as needed,” he said. “With a little bit of luck, everything will go exactly according to plan, and we will be done in January.”
Roberts was asked about keeping truck traffic out of Summerville Park.
“We try every way we can to keep our trucks on main thoroughfares and neighborhoods,” he said. So, your request is something that we would absolutely plan to do. I will tell you that occasionally we will have rogue truck drivers, but the second that we find one of them, they are no longer welcome at our site.”
Again, the work is expected to be completed in January.
